The method, step by step
Your Soul Urge number is the total of the vowels in your full birth name: give each vowel its number, add up each part of the name, reduce each part, then add the parts together and reduce once more, keeping 11, 22, and 33.
Example: for Maya Lynn Cole
The Y in Maya sits between two vowels, so it is read as a consonant and adds nothing. The Y in Lynn sits between two consonants, so it is read as a vowel and adds 7. Cole’s O and E make 11, which stays 11 because it is a master number. The parts then add to 2 + 7 + 11 = 20, and 2 + 0 gives a Soul Urge of 2.
Change the Y rule and the same name reads differently: counting every Y as a vowel gives 9, and counting none gives 4. That is why the calculator shows its choice for every Y and lets you change it.
The letter that can go either way
Y counts as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound. The calculator suggests a role for each Y from the letters beside it, and you can switch any of them. These are the suggestions it starts from:

Spelling cannot prove pronunciation, so treat the suggestion as a starting point. The Y in Bryan and the Y in Kaye can sound different from name to name. Other schools use a fixed rule instead: some count every Y as a vowel, and some never do. Most differences come from three choices, and none of them is a calculation error. The first is Y, covered above. The second is order: this calculator reduces each part of the name before adding the parts, while a shortcut adds every vowel at once. For Irene Hugh, the parts give 1 + 3 = 4, but the one-pass total is 22. The third is master numbers: this site keeps 11, 22, and 33 and writes them with their root, such as 11/2, while some calculators reduce them to 2, 4, and 6.
